Your restaurant’s point-of-sale (POS) system is probably one of the most important pieces of technology. On top of being a key source of information for financial aspects of your business, explore how data from your POS system can power other aspects of your business such as marketing and front-of-house operations with the right integration.

POS systems process and record all of the transactions between you and your diners. Each record of every transaction is itemised, categorised, timed and summed. Multiply all of that by the total number of transactions you make each day — and you get a lot of data. 

Without being able to match all this data to diners, and to be able to contact and identify these diners, this data is much less powerful to restaurant marketeers and front-of-house managers. For front-of-house restaurant managers, the ability to personalise diners’ experiences based on what they have ordered before will win you loyal customers. A survey by Deloitte showed that 37% of diners were won over by restaurants that remembered their needs and preferences.

When a repeat diner is visiting your restaurant this week, browsing through their order history will advise how your front-of-house team would better personalise the experience. 

If a diner has a history of ordering seafood dishes, you could ensure the server is equipped to make the right recommendations on what is new and exciting in that category. If a diner always orders your restaurant’s specialty, you may also consider calling him before his reservation and allowing him to pre-order the dish.
